July, 2025 marks the centenary of Congolese freedom fighter and icon of the world anticolonial movement, Patrice Lumumba. In Bangalore, celebrations of his centenary will be held with a photo exhibition in July, 2025 at the Indian Institute of World Culture, discussions and film screenings in September, 2025.
To honor Lumumba's legacy, we will examine the history of the African liberation movements, focusing on five figures; Patrice Lumumba, Oliver Tambo, Amilcar Cabral, Kwame Nkrumah and W.E.B. Du Bois. We will discuss India's relationship to the African liberation movements through figures such as Mahatma Gandhi, E.S. Reddy and Romesh Chandra.

Lumumba is a 2000 biographical film directed by Raoul Peck, which shows the short but powerful political career of Congolese freedom fighter Patrice Lumumba
