We are today a subject race and our educational system has been devised to serve the interests of our rulers. But even as the most selfish person is obliged to hold out some lure to those whom he is out to exploit, so a number of temptations for studying in their institutions have been brought into being by the rulers. Moreover, all members of Government are not alike. There are some liberal minded among them who will consider the problem of education on merits. Therefore, there is no doubt some good even in the present system. But the prevailing education is willy-nilly put to wrong use, i.e. it is looked upon as a means of earning money and position.
The ancient aphorism, 'Education is that which liberates", is as true today as it was before. Education here does not mean mere spiritual knowledge nor does liberation signify only spiritual liberation after death. knowledge includes all training that is useful for the service of mankind and liberation means freedom from all manner of servitude even in the present life. Servitude is of two kinds: slavery to domination from outside and to one's own artificial needs. The knowledge acquired in the pursuit of this ideal alone constitutes true study.
Realizing that a form of education devised by foreign rulers could only be calculated to subserve their interests, the Congress accepted in 1920, among other things, the principle of the boycott of all Governmental educational institutions. But that era seems to be over. The demand for entrance to Government institutions and those imparting education on similar lines is increasing faster than the number of such schools and colleges. The ranks of examinees are ever swelling. In spite of this hypnotic spell, however, I hold that true education is what I have defined.
A student who is superficially attracted by the educational ideal set forth by me and leaves his studies is liable to repent of his action later. I have, therefore, suggested a safer course. While continuing his studies in the institution which he has joined he should ever keep before him the ideal of service set forth by me and use his studies with a view to serve that ideal, never for making money. Moreover, he should try to make up the lack in the present education by application of his leisure hours to the ideal. He will, therefore, avail himself to the utmost of whatever opportunity offers for taking part in the constructive programme.

हम आज एक प्रजा जाति हैं और हमारी शिक्षा प्रणाली हमारे शासकों के हित की सेवा के लिए तैयार की गई है। लेकिन सबसे स्वार्थी व्यक्ति भी, कुछ लालच देने के लिए, उन्हीं लोगों के लिए कुछ करने को मजबूर हो जाता है, जिनका वह शोषण कर रहा हो। वैसे ही शासकों ने उनके संस्थानों में पढ़ने के लिए कई लालच खड़े किए हैं। इसके अलावा, सरकार के सभी सदस्य एक जैसे नहीं होते हैं। इनमें कुछ उदारवादी भी हैं जो शिक्षा की समस्या को मेरिट के आधार पर देखते हैं। इसलिए वर्तमान व्यवस्था में भी कुछ अच्छा है। लेकिन प्रचलित शिक्षा का जानबूझकर गलत उपयोग किया जाता है, अर्थात इसे धन और पद कमाने का साधन माना जाता है।
प्राचीन सूक्ति, ‘सा विद्या या विमुक्तये’ 'विद्या वह है जो मुक्त करती है', में आज भी उतनी ही सत्य है जितना पहले था। यहाँ शिक्षा का अर्थ केवल आध्यात्मिक ज्ञान नहीं है और न ही मुक्ति का अर्थ मृत्यु के बाद केवल आध्यात्मिक मुक्ति है। ज्ञान में वे सभी प्रशिक्षण शामिल हैं जो मानव जाति की सेवा के लिए उपयोगी हैं और मुक्ति का अर्थ है वर्तमान जीवन में भी सभी प्रकार की गुलामी से मुक्ति। गुलामी दो प्रकार की होती है: बाहरी प्रभुत्व की गुलामी और स्वयं की कृत्रिम आवश्यकताओं की गुलामी। इस आदर्श की खोज में अर्जित ज्ञान ही सच्चा अध्ययन है।
क्योंकि विदेशी शासकों द्वारा तैयार की गई शिक्षा हमेशा अन्य लक्ष्य को आगे बढ़ाने के लिए रहेगी, कांग्रेस ने 1920 में, अन्य बातों के अलावा, सभी सरकारी शैक्षणिक संस्थानों के बहिष्कार के सिद्धांत को स्वीकार कर लिया। लेकिन ऐसा लगता है कि वह दौर खत्म हो गया है। सरकारी संस्थानों और इसी किस्म की शिक्षा प्रदान करने वाले अन्य संस्थान की मांग, स्कूलों और कॉलेजों की संख्या की तुलना में तेजी से बढ़ रही है। छात्रों की कतार लगातार बढ़ती जा रही है। इस सम्मोहन के बावजूद, मेरा मानना है कि सच्ची शिक्षा वह है जिसे मैंने परिभाषित किया है।
कोई छात्र जो मेरे द्वारा निर्धारित शैक्षिक आदर्शों से अगंभीर रूप से आकर्षित होता है और अपनी पढ़ाई छोड़ देता है, वह बाद में अपने किए पर पछताएगा। इसलिए, मैंने एक सुरक्षित पाठ्यक्रम का सुझाव दिया है। जिस संस्थान में वह पढ़ रहा है, वहां ही पढ़ाई करते हुए हमेशा मेरे द्वारा निर्धारित सेवा का आदर्श अपने सामने रख कर चले और अपने अध्ययन का उपयोग उस आदर्श की ओर ही इस्तेमाल करे, पैसा कमाने के लिए नहीं। इसके अलावा, अपने खाली समय को इस आदर्श की सेवा में बिता कर शिक्षा में कमी को पूरा करने का प्रयास करे। इसलिए, वह कंस्ट्रक्टिव प्रोग्राम में भाग लेने के लिए जो भी अवसर प्रदान हो, उसका अधिकतम लाभ उठाए।

King, The Purpose of Education
To my mind, education has a two-fold function in society. On the one hand it should discipline the mind for sustained and persistent speculation. On the other hand it should integrate human life around central, focusing ideals. It is a tragedy that the latter is often neglected in our educational system.
Education should equip us with the power to think effectively and objectively. To think is one of the hardest things in the world, and to think objectively is still harder. Yet this is the job of education. Education should cause us to rise beyond the horizon of legions of half truth, prejudices and propaganda. Education should enable us to “weigh and consider,” to discern the true from the false, the relevant from the irrelevant, and the real from the unreal.1 The first function of education, therefore, is to teach man to think intensively. But this is not the whole of education. If education stops here it can be the most dangerous force in society. Some of the greatest criminals in society have been men {who) possessed the power of concentration and reason, but they had no morals. Perhaps the most dangerous periods in civilization have been those periods when there was no moral foundation in society.
Education without morals is like a ship without a compass, merely wandering nowhere. It is not enough to have the power of concentration, but we must have worthy objectives upon which to concentrate. It is not enough to know truth, but we must love truth and sacrifice for it.

मेरे हिसाब से शिक्षा की समाज में दो भूमिका है. एक ओर, इसे निरंतर और लगातार चिंतन के लिए मन को अनुशासित करना चाहिए। दूसरी ओर इसे मानव जीवन को कुछ मुख्य आदर्शों के इर्द गिर्द एकीकृत करना चाहिए। यह दुख की बात है कि हमारी शिक्षा प्रणाली में अक्सर इस दूसरी भूमिका की उपेक्षा होती है।
शिक्षा को हमें असरदार और निष्पक्ष रूप से सोचने की शक्ति देनी चाहिए। स्पष्ट सोचना दुनिया की सबसे कठिन चीजों में से एक है, और निष्पक्ष रूप से सोचना उससे भी कठिन है। फिर भी यह शिक्षा का काम है। शिक्षा को हमें अर्धसत्य, पूर्वाग्रहों और प्रोपेगंडा के क्षितिज से ऊपर उठाना चाहिए। शिक्षा को हमें असत्य से सत्य, अप्रासंगिक से प्रासंगिक, और वहम से वास्तविक को पहचानने के लिए "नाप तौल के विचार करने" में सक्षम करना चाहिए। इसलिए, शिक्षा का पहला कार्य मनुष्य को गहराई से सोचना सिखाना है। लेकिन यह पूरी शिक्षा नहीं है। अगर शिक्षा यहीं रुक जाती है तो यह समाज की सबसे खतरनाक ताकत हो सकती है। समाज के कुछ सबसे बड़े अपराधी ऐसे पुरुष रहे हैं जिनके पास एकाग्रता और तर्क की शक्ति थी, लेकिन उनके पास कोई ईमान नहीं था। शायद सभ्यता में सबसे खतरनाक काल वे काल रहे हैं जब समाज में कोई नैतिक आधार नहीं था।
नैतिकता के बिना, शिक्षा बिन-कम्पस जहाज की तरह है, जो बस भटक रहा है। ध्यान की शक्ति होना ही काफी नहीं है, बल्कि हमारे पास योग्य उद्देश्य होने चाहिए जिन पर ध्यान केंद्रित किया जा सके। सत्य को जानना ही काफी नहीं है, बल्कि हमें सत्य से प्रेम करना चाहिए और उसके लिए त्याग करना चाहिए।

What I would like you to do first of all is to think. Thinking is something which does not come automatically to a person. Gossiping with a neighbour is not thought. If you repeat something which somebody else has said, it is not thought. I do not expect all of you to become mighty thinkers, though some of you may. But I would like all of you to think and to develop the art of thinking. Nothing is more helpful to thinking than reading, that is, reading intelligently, because thereby you get other people’s thoughts, and by weighing them you can think yourself. I have often said that it is very unfortunate that people think and read so little nowadays, especially in India. I do not call newspaper-reading reading. But any reading which makes you think is useful reading, even if it is a very good novel. Great novels always make one think, because they are pictures of life painted by great minds.
