The great Indian sage and poet-philosopher, Rabindranath Tagore, will arrive very soon and will meet our students to the number of several thousands. I take this opportunity, therefore, of preparing a welcome for him.
Rabindranath Tagore has visited Europe, America and Japan. Wherever he goes he receives a tremendous welcome. You will recall that out-burst of enthusiasm in the Chien Men Station, on the day he arrived, such as has never been accorded to any other foreign guest, so warm it was, and so sincere.
The meaningless idolatry of hero-worship is common amongst the peoples of Europe and America. We, Chinese, have not yet acquired this fashionable habit. We, who welcome Rabindranath Tagore, may each have our several reasons, — it may even be that, like the Europeans and Americans, some of us are merely hero-worshipping him; but we must all recognise the one great central idea, that he comes to us from the country which is our nearest and dearest brother, — India.
To say that the country of India is our brother is not a mere matter of courtesy to our guest. It has its foundation in history. In ancient times China did not enjoy that facility of communication which was the privilege of the races bordering the Mediterranean Sea. We suffered from the disadvantage of being shut up in one corner of eastern Asia without any means of communicating with other great races and cultures..
But across our south-western boundary, there was a great and cultured country, India. Both in character and geography, India and China are like twin brothers. Before most of the civilised races became active, we two brothers had already begun to study the great problems which concern the whole of mankind. We had already accomplished much in the interests of humanity. India was ahead of us and we, the little brother, followed behind. But Nature had not been kind. She had placed between us a vast area of unfeeling desert and two great ranges of cruel snowy peaks, which separated us for thousands of years. It was not till two thousand years ago that we were given gradually to know that we had a very good elder brother on the earth.
When did these two great countries begin to communicate with each other?
What we as historians are able to vouch for is that the first communication between us as brothers occurred in the first century of the era of Christ. From the tenth year of Han Yung Tsin to the fifth year of Tang Chen Yuan (67 — 789 A.D.), roughly during eight hundred years, the Hindu scholars who came to China, numbered twenty-four, to which may be added thirteen from Kashmir, thus making thirty-seven in all. Our scholars, who went to India to study, during the period from the western Tsin to the Tang dynasties (265 — 790 A.D.) numbered 187, the names of 105 of whom we can ascertain. Among the most famous from India were Tamolosa {Dharma~raksha), Chu Shien (Buddha-hhadra), and Chen Ti {Jina-hhadra) and from China, Fa Hien, Yuan Chuang and I Tsing.
During the period of 700 or 800 years, we lived like affectionate brothers, loving and respecting one another.
And now we are told that, within recent years, we have at last come into contact with civilised ( !) races. Why have they come to us? They have come coveting our land and our wealth; they have offered us as presents cannon balls dyed in human blood; their factories manufacture goods and ma-chines which daily deprive our people of their crafts.
But we two brothers were not like that in the days gone by. We were both devoted to the cause of the universal truth, we set out to fulfil the destiny of mankind, we felt the necessity for co-operation. We Chinese specially felt the need for leadership and direction from our elder brothers, the people of India. Neither of us were stained in the least by any motive of self-interest — of that we had none.
Now what have we so received?
1 . India taught us to embrace the idea of absolute freedom, — that fundamental freedom of mind, which enables us to shake off all the fetters of past traditions and habits as well as the present customs of a particular age, — that spiritual freedom which casts off the enslaving forces of material existence.
2. India also taught us the idea of absolute love, that pure love towards all living beings which eliminates all obsessions of jealousy, anger, impatience and disgust, which expresses itself in deep pity and sympathy for the foolish, the wicked and the sinful, — ^that absolute love, which recognises the inseparability between all beings.
3. But our elder brother had still something more to give. He brought us invaluable assistance in the field of literature and art. In the first place, these came indirectly through Si Yu; and then directly from the Indian sages, who came to China bringing with them as gifts for presentation to our Emperor, their pictures, sculptures and books.
We have unfortunately been separated from one another now for at least one thousand years and have each pursued our respective lines of development. We have had calamities during these years of separation. What have we not experienced? We have been threatened, mocked, trampled upon and have suffered all possible mortifications, so much so indeed that not only have we been looked upon with contemptuous eyes, but we ourselves have begun to lose our sense of self-respect.
But we have faith in the imperishability of human endeavour and the seeds we have sown, in spite of the many vicissitudes and inclemencies which we are passing through, will eventually bring us a harvest in the fulness of time. Both the civilisations represented by India
and China are hoary with ancient traditions and yet I feel that there is in them the vigour of eternal youth, which shows itself to-day in India in the two great personalities of Tagore and Gandhi.
After a thousand years of separation during which period, however, we two continued to cherish thoughts of love for one another, this elder brother of ours has once more come to us animated with fraternal sentiments. Both of us bear lines of sorrow on our face, our hair is grey with age, we stare with a blank and vacant look as if we are just awakened from a dream ; but, as we gaze on each other, what recollections and fond memories of our early youth rise in our mind--of those days, when we shared our joys and sorrows together I Now that we have once more the happiness of embracing each other we shall not allow ourselves to be separated again.

महान भारतीय संत और कवि-दार्शनिक, रबीन्द्रनाथ टैगोर, बहुत जल्द आएंगे और हजारों की संख्या में हमारे छात्रों से मिलेंगे। इसलिए, मैं उनके लिए स्वागत की तैयारी करने के इस अवसर का लाभ उठा रहा हूं।

प्राचीन काल में चीन को संचार की वह सुविधा प्राप्त नहीं थी जो और जातियों को थी जो भूमध्य सागर के पास थे । पृथक रहने का नुकसान हमें उठाना पड़ा। हम पूर्वी एशिया के एक कोने में अन्य महान जातियों और संस्कृतियों के साथ संचार के किसी भी साधन के बिना रहे।
लेकिन हमारी दक्षिण-पश्चिमी सीमा के पार एक महान और सुसंस्कृत देश था, भारत। दोनों चरित्र और भूगोल में भारत और चीन जुड़वां भाइयों की तरह हैं। अधिकांश सभ्य जातियों के सक्रिय होने से पहले, हम दोनों भाइयों ने उन बड़ी समस्याओं का अध्ययन करना शुरू कर दिया था जो पूरी मानव जाति से संबंधित हैं। हम मानवता के हित में पहले ही बहुत कुछ हासिल कर चुके हैं। भारत हमसे आगे था और हम छोटे भाई पीछे। लेकिन प्रकृति दयालु नहीं थी. उसने हमारे बीच असंवेदनशील रेगिस्तान का एक विशाल क्षेत्र और क्रूर बर्फीली चोटियों की दो विशाल श्रृंखलाएं रखीं, जिन्होंने हमें हजारों वर्षों तक अलग रखा। दो हजार साल पहले तक हमें धीरे-धीरे यह पता नहीं चला था कि पृथ्वी पर हमारा कोई बहुत अच्छा बड़ा भाई है।

इतिहासकार के रूप में हम इस बात की पुष्टि करने में सक्षम हैं कि भाइयों के रूप में हमारे बीच पहला संचार ईसा के युग की पहली शताब्दी में हुआ था। हान युंग त्सिन के दसवें वर्ष से तांग चेन युआन के पांचवें वर्ष (67-789 ई.) तक, लगभग आठ सौ वर्षों के दौरान, चीन आने वाले हिंदू विद्वानों की संख्या चौबीस थी, जिसमें कश्मीर से तेरह जोड़े जा सकते हैं। इस प्रकार कुल मिलाकर सैंतीस हो गए। हमारे विद्वान, जो पश्चिमी त्सिन से तांग राजवंशों (265-790 ईस्वी) तक की अवधि के दौरान अध्ययन करने के लिए भारत गए थे, उनकी संख्या 187 थी, जिनमें से 105 के नाम हम सुनिश्चित कर सकते हैं। भारत से सबसे प्रसिद्ध लोगों में तमोलोसा {धर्मरक्षा), चू शिएन (बुद्ध-हद्रा), और चेन टी {जिना-हद्रा) और चीन से, फा हिएन, युआन चुआंग और आई त्सिंग शामिल थे।
700 या 800 वर्षों की अवधि के दौरान, हम स्नेही भाइयों की तरह रहते थे, एक दूसरे से प्यार करते थे और उनका सम्मान करते थे।
और अब हमें बताया गया है कि, हाल के वर्षों में, हम आख़िरकार सभ्य (!) जातियों के संपर्क में आ गए हैं। वे हमारे पास क्यों आये हैं? वे हमारी भूमि और धन का लालच करके आये हैं; उन्होंने हमें खून में रंगे तोप के गोले उपहार दिये हैं; उनके कारखाने सामान और मशीनें बनाते हैं जो प्रतिदिन हमारे लोगों को उनकी कला से वंचित करते हैं।
लेकिन बीते दिनों में हम दोनों भाई ऐसे नहीं थे. हम दोनों सार्वभौमिक सत्य के प्रति समर्पित थे, हम मानव जाति की नियति को पूरा करने के लिए निकले थे, हमने सहयोग की आवश्यकता महसूस की। हम चीनियों को विशेष रूप से अपने बड़े भाई, भारत के लोगों से नेतृत्व और निर्देशन की आवश्यकता महसूस हुई। हममें से किसी पर भी स्व-हित के किसी भी उद्देश्य का दाग़ नहीं था।
अब हमें क्या मिला है?
1 . भारत ने हमें पूर्ण स्वतंत्रता के विचार को अपनाना सिखाया है, - मन की वह मौलिक स्वतंत्रता, जो हमें पिछली परंपराओं और आदतों के साथ-साथ एक विशेष युग के वर्तमान रीति-रिवाजों की सभी बेड़ियों को तोड़ने में सक्षम बनाती है, - वह आध्यात्मिक स्वतंत्रता जो हमें भौतिक अस्तित्व की गुलामी करने वाली ताकतों से मुक्ति देती है।
2. भारत ने हमें पूर्ण प्रेम का विचार भी सिखाया, सभी जीवित प्राणियों के प्रति शुद्ध प्रेम। जो ईर्ष्या, क्रोध, अधीरता और घृणा के सभी जुनून को समाप्त कर देता है, जो मूर्खों, दुष्टों और पापियों के लिए गहरी दया और सहानुभूति में व्यक्त होता है, - वह पूर्ण प्रेम, जो सभी प्राणियों के बीच अविभाज्यता को पहचानता है।
3. लेकिन हमारे बड़े भाई को अभी भी कुछ और देना था। उन्होंने हमें अमूल्य सहायता प्रदान की साहित्य एवं कला के क्षेत्र में. सबसे पहले, ये अप्रत्यक्ष रूप से सी यू के माध्यम से आए; और फिर सीधे भारतीय संतों से, जो हमारे सम्राट को भेंट करने के लिए उपहार के रूप में अपने चित्र, मूर्तियां और किताबें लेकर चीन आए थे।
दुर्भाग्य से हम कम से कम एक हजार वर्षों से एक-दूसरे से अलग हो गए हैं और प्रत्येक ने विकास की अपनी-अपनी राह अपनाई है। अलगाव के इन वर्षों के दौरान हमें विपत्तियों का सामना करना पड़ा है। हमने क्या अनुभव नहीं किया है? हमें धमकियां दी गई, मज़ाक उड़ाया गया, रौंदा गया और हर संभव यातनाएं झेलनी पड़ीं, यहाँ तक कि हमें न केवल तिरस्कार की दृष्टि से देखा गया, बल्कि हम स्वयं भी- हमारे आत्म-सम्मान की भावना को खोने लगे हैं।
लेकिन हमें मानव प्रयास की अविनाशिता में विश्वास है और जिन बीजों को हमने बोया है, वे कई उतार-चढ़ावों और विषमताओं के बावजूद, जिनसे हम गुजर रहे हैं, अंततः समय आने पर हमारे लिए फ़सल लाएंगे। दोनों सभ्यताएँ भारत और चीन प्राचीन परंपराओं से ग्रस्त हैं और फिर भी मुझे लगता है कि उनमें शाश्वत युवाओं की शक्ति है, जो आज भारत में टैगोर और गांधी के दो महान व्यक्तित्वों में दिखाई देती है।
हालाँकि, एक हजार साल के अलगाव के बाद भी हम दोनों एक-दूसरे के प्रति प्रेम के भाव रखे रहे, भाईचारे की भावना से ओत-प्रोत हमारा यह बड़ा भाई फिर हमारे पास आया है। हम दोनों के चेहरे पर दुख की रेखाएं हैं, उम्र के साथ हमारे बाल सफेद हो गए हैं, हम एक खाली और शून्य दृष्टि से देखते हैं जैसे कि हम अभी एक सपने से जागे हैं; लेकिन, जब हम एक-दूसरे को देखते हैं, तो हमारे दिमाग में हमारे शुरुआती काल की यादें उभरती हैं, और यादें उन दिनों की, जब हम अपने सुख और दुख एक साथ साझा करते थे। अब जब हमारे पास है एक बार फिर एक-दूसरे को गले लगाने का खुश अवसर है, हम खुद को फिर से अलग नहीं होने देंगे।
